John’s Journey

The Setup: John, a project manager, works across multiple EU countries. He needs to keep his digital social security documents, like the Portable Document A1 (PDA1), to confirm his legal status and entitlements.

The Need for Verification: Upon arriving in Germany for a new project, John must present his PDA1 to the Human Resources department to verify his social security coverage. The HR department ensures that the PDA1 is authentic, valid, and in John’s possession.

The Business Context: Human Resources departments must ensure that workers from abroad pay the correct social security contributions and possess the PDA1 document. An efficient, secure, and reliable verification process is crucial to avoid legal liabilities, fines, and loss of trust.

The Verification:

1. The HR department uses a verification app to request John’s PDA1 and his identity data (PID).
2. The request is sent through a secure channel using a standard protocol for digital information exchange to protect John’s data.
3. John’s EUDI Wallet receives the request. He evaluates it and gives consent to the HR department’s request, deciding what information to share.
4. The wallet ensures the consented information is shared securely, confirming the credential is possessed by the holder of the wallet.
5. The HR department receives the document with the necessary information, confirming its authenticity, validity, and possession by John through a reliable verification process.
6. They trust that John is using his own EUDI Wallet. If in doubt, they can request additional identity data.

Emma’s Journey

The Setup: Emma, an English musician who performs with an orchestra across multiple EU countries, seamlessly manages her healthcare needs through modern technology. Using a standardized, fully digital issuing process, she securely stores her digital European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in her EUDI Wallet, ensuring she can easily access necessary healthcare services while travelling abroad.

The Need for Verification: Emma arrives abroad for a concert. After a small accident, she needs to access healthcare services and must present her EHIC to the local healthcare provider. The healthcare provider ensures that the EHIC is authentic, valid, and in Emma’s possession.

The Business Context: Healthcare providers may automatically check the entitlement to healthcare services, ensuring that Emma gets access to healthcare at the same costs as locals and that the reimbursement process for the provided treatment is efficient and fast.

The Verification Process:

1. After her accident, Emma visits a local healthcare provider. The provider uses a hardware device with NFC to request Emma’s EHIC and Identity Data.
2. Emma’s EUDI Wallet receives the request using a standard protocol, and she authorizes the provider’s device to receive the EHIC information via NFC.
3. The provider’s device verifies the EHIC’s authenticity, validity, and confirms that it is in Emma’s possession.
4. Upon successful verification

·        Emma receives healthcare services without incurring costs.

·        an information exchange between the healthcare provider and relevant social security institutions is initiated immediately to handle the cost reimbursement process.
